Red Ten Audio Announces MPZ Player

Red Ten Audio has launched a touchscreen digital music player, the MPZ Player.

One of the biggest audion industry developments in recent years, the MPZ Player allows music lovers to store, organize and play their entire CD collection or the music of their choice using a touchscreen computer.

With audio streamers that are designed to sit on a shelves and connect to speakers, users can listen to tracks in up to three different rooms in the home.

Music and favorite play lists can also be downloaded to portable music players such as iPod and Rio Karma.

Trevor Bond, director of Red Ten Audio, said: "Digital audio is the future for home hi-fi systems, storing your entire music collection and having instant access to tracks that you want."

Red Ten Audio, a subsidiary of Red Ten Computers, will be selling the players directly but also aims to attract leading department stores and specialist music suppliers. The player will also be marketed to restaurants and bars.

Apple's successful empire in the digital music realm is being threatened by two seperate intellectual property challenges tha claim its FairPlay DRM system and its iPod music player contain technologies to which Apple does not own rights. Though both technologies were patented in 2003, the patents were filed for prior to Apple's release of the first iPod in 2001. Other mp3 player makers such as Rio, may be in violation of patent rights as well.

Apple is currently in negotiations and may face a suit if no agreement is reached by Mar. 21.

iPod users will have to stick with iTunes for now as the new Napster To Go Service is not compatible with Apple's iPod music players. With Napster To Go, subscribers can download an unlimited number of songs to compatible MP3 players for a monthly fee of $14.95.

The down side to Napster's new monthly service subscription is that if subscribers decide to stop paying that monthly subscription fee, they will no longer be able to play the music they've already downloaded.

Digital music players compatible with Napster to Go include the Creative Zen Micro, the Gateway MP3 Photo Jukebox and the iRiver H10. The Samsung YH-920 and Dell Pocket DJ will also be compatible following an installation of upgraded firmware, according to Napster. Creative, iRiver and Samsung media centers are also compatible with the service.
