HP Forges Ahead as Leading Laptop Manufacturer

According to new research, HP is the leader in the world notebook market with 17.7% of the market share. 

DisplaySearch has announced that HP exceeded Dell's shipments by 50,000 units in the third quarter of 2006.   Dell moved into second place, with 17.5 per cent of the market.  Acer, Toshiba and Lenovo also made the top five laptop manufacturers.

Regional stats were different however, whith HP being the overall leader in Asia Pacific and Latin America, while Dell took the lead in North American sales.  In the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, Acer came out on top, even outpacing the total global market growth at 49 percent.

HP Unveils Laptops With Fingerprint ID System

NEW DELHI: Hewlett-Packard India has unveiled new laptops with enhanced security features that include fingerprint identification system.

The new notebooks come with a lock mechanism grants access when their fingerprint matches the one already configured in the machine.

"The latest offerings will further strengthen the business notebook portfolio and come with a set of personalised features that will help users to protect their crucial data,'' HP India Vice-President, Ravi Swaminathan, said.

The new notebooks are priced between Rs. 80,000 and Rs. 1.20 lakh.

HP Recalls 15,700 Notebook Batteries

HP today recalled 15,700 notebook computer lithium ion rechargeable batteries used in HP and Compaq notebooks citing a burn  and fire hazard.  The worldwide recall affects about 4100 of batteries issued to notebooks sold in the US.

The affected batteries have a bar code label starting with L3. Consumers with this type of battery should stop using it immediately and contact HP to determine if the battery is being recalled and for a free replacement battery if it is included in the recall.

Consumers can get additional information by calling HP at 888-202-4320, or visiting the HP Battery Replacement Program Web site at www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement.

HP Announces New Notebook Series

Hewlett-Packard has announced two new notebooks, HP Compaq 9400 and HP Compaq 6300 series.  Each features a wider screen, Intel Core Duo processor, several pricing options and a rugged design.  The new designs are thinner and lighter than their 9600 model predecessor. Consumers can opt for "bright view" or anti-glare capabilities on their 17 inch display.  mobile PC battery that it said can push system battery life beyond 14 hours.

The 9420 notebook models are scratch and scuff resistant and keyboards are spill-resistant.    

The 9400 line will ship later this month and pricing will begin at $1,499.

Designed for "balanced mobility," the HP Compaq nx6320 and nc6320 models will ship in early April and pricing will start at $1,049.

HP's latest notebooks come as rivals such as Lenovo, Dell and Acer have been announcing new laptops with new Intel Core Duo dual-core processors.

The new battery, the HP Ultra-Capacity Battery, is a 12-cell lithium ion unit that can be charged separately or while plugged into the notebook. Compatible with new systems throughout HP's business notebook lineup, the battery is due to ship in mid-April and carry a list price of $199.

HP Releases nc6140 3G Laptop

Hewlett-Packard announced its nc6140 laptop with built-in 3G EV-DO capabilities. HP is the newest vendor that is building in 3G.  Dell and others have also announced they will ship 3G laptops.
