DeForest Cookie Jars on eBay

I see cookie jars often at garage sales and never am sure whether or not they have value beyond the garage sale price, so I tend to not buy them to sell on eBay.  However, I came across an interesting article today about DeForest cookie jars and their value:

"The cookie jar...was made by DeForest of California, which was founded in 1950 by Margaret DeForest. Like so many other California potteries of the day, this firm made gift and novelty kitchen wares that many people found (and find) appealing.

A check of the market will show DeForest condiment jars in comic anthropomorphic shapes labeled "onions," "garlic," "mustard," "relish" and "jam," being offered for about $55 each. DeForest also made a lot of items with pig themes, including a dip set with pig heads and a caption, "Go ahead, make a pig of yourself!" that occasionally can be found for around $150.

Before it went out of business in 1970, DeForest made a fairly wide selection of cookie jars _ some of which can be very valuable. Among the most valuable of these are the "Cookie King," worth more than $2,000 if you are lucky enough to find one, and "Pony Tail" girl , which is worth around half that much.

Other desirable DeForest cookie jars with values in the $250 to $500 plus range include "Snappy Gingerbread Boy," "Halo Boy/Holy Devil," "Parrot" (with a colorful paint job; more drab examples go for less) and "Nun." Most DeForest cookie jars, however, sell for less than $250 _ and some for less than $100."

Determining Value of Pez Dispensers

Pez

If you've ever wondered about the Pez dispensers you see at garage sales and their value, we have some answers.  Below you will find a few pointers to determine age, value and whether or not they might be worth selling on eBay. One recently sold for over $1200, so it is worth your time to get informed!

The Pez dispensers all have a number on them somewhere and you want to find the ones with the lower number on the side.  These are the older ones -- starting with a "3" for example. The ones starting with a "4" are more recent.

Also, some of the older ones have feet.  If they are thin feet, these are generally more valuable. The regular sized feet Pez dispensers are more common, however.

Condition is a factor so be sure to check for cracks, a loose spring, or a head that no longer works or is loose.

In addition, you will want to watch out for Pez dispensers with errors (for instance a Darth Vader inside a Luke Skywalker original wrapper). These are generally one of a kind and will command a higher price on eBay.

There are several books as well to aid you in identifying Pez.  "Collector's Guide to Pez" by Shawn Peterson, is one that I recommend.
