In searching for Starbucks news today, I encountered Winter, a man on a quest for the last 10 years to visit every Starbucks in the world. A documentary film titled Starbucking, was chosen for the Sonoma Valley Film Festival and documents Winter's travels across the US and other countries as he seeks out Starbucks stores.
Our local Starbucks is holding a Spelling Bee for kids this Saturday to coincide with their first ever movie promotion. Akeelah and the Bee, set to open April 28, is about an 11 year old girl who attempts to cope with the death of her father by becoming a spelling whiz and competing in the national spelling bee.
"Starbucks is promoting Akeelah
to its millions of [customers as it's] touted on the sleeves slipped
onto the Starbucks cups (it sells 4 million beverages daily),
emblazoned with obscure words like "shalloon," a lightweight wool
fabric used for coat linings. Coasters are used to promote the movie,
too, and a display table at the Starbucks in South Orange, N.J.,
recently was stacked high with travel Scrabble sets.... .Last Friday
the chain began a countdown to Akeelah's opening date, April
28, on the ubiquitous chalkboards that spell out the day's coffee
blends. Starbucks has no plans to pour bucks into making films,
limiting its involvement to promoting the movie (and taking a cut of
the profits in return) and selling DVDs." via MSNBC
Chinese President Hu
Jintao evidently loves Starbucks coffee as much as the rest of us. Hu, while visiting Seattle and speaking to business executives, politicians and other
dignitaries over dinner last night at the home of Microsoft
Chairman Bill Gates, indicated his passion for the popular coffee chain.
"Starbucks coffee shops have mushroomed in China's cities," said the Chinese leader through a translator. "If I were not serving in this office, I would certainly prefer to go into one of the coffee shops run by Starbucks," said the usually reserved Hu, drawing laughter from the crowd, which included Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz. Today Starbucks debuted two new drinks for Spring, the Tazo Green Tea Latte and the Blackberry Green Tea Frappuccino. Both are made with Japanese green tea matcha powder, and they share a creamy mint color, a fresh green flavor, and best of all, the healthy goodness of green tea. Starbucks Green Tea Latte boasts the lowest-calorie latte drink on the menu. A short skim contains a mere 70 calories and is on par with a glass of OJ in antioxidants.
